TORONTO – An RCMP officer shot and killed a female officer during an officer-involved shooting Thursday afternoon near North Star, a busy bus stop in Brampton.

Officers responding to reports of a shooting in the 600 block of York Road at around 4 p.m. stopped a black Audi T4 driven by two men with a stolen silver Suburban on a bicycle near King Avenue and York Boulevard at about 6 p.m., the Toronto Star reports.

The four shots from a police cruiser struck in the rear view mirror as officers approached the vehicle. At least one of the shots took place inside a black SUV, the officer thought.

My instincts were to not fire first. I said, ‘Look, I told you this, this is how I’m going to get you out,’ the driver, Terence Reynolds, said during a press conference.

Police say the suspect was driving from Brampton to Toronto, the Star reports. They believe Reynolds pulled over the same road where the shooting happened and he was shot.

Police said they had a large group of protesters outside the home of a witness to the shooting. Witnesses said Reynolds shot the driver of the T4.

An RCMP police spokeswoman said the officer was shot at around 1130 hours, when the suspect fled and was captured on camera in the early hours. He was in custody.

He was released on 200,000 bail and will remain on the force until he is released from custody.

I don’t expect that my officers have anything to do with that, but that’s just part of my job, said Reynolds’s lawyer, Mark Meehan.
