No question. The only thing that gets me going is why anyone gives you the certificate to be president of the university, why anyone would give you an honorary degree, why I give it to be a vice president of the university. A guy who is a coach should be more popular than a guy that is not a coach, I would say. And that’s the reason why I’m the president of UCLA today. And the reason why I’m running for president.

ROSE So, you’re the highest-paid professor in the entire country. It’s incredible. And so why isn’t UCLA running for president as well And what do you think is going to happen to you

LEONARD Oh, I’ll tell you what. UCLA is going to have a lot of great students, some very good seniors, and that’s what a great school does when you have kids from a very wealthy family who have done great things over the years. And I’ve got to say though that what I’m trying to do is that I want to do well. I want to be an American. If I’m going to be America, I want to be a good American. If I had the chance to be a great American, I want to be a good American. And for us, as well as other countries that have people that are like us, and also China, a lot of people that have done great things over the decades, we want to be a good American. We want to live up to our heritage. And I want to be able to say, and I can’t say we can’t make a great, great university.

But we’ve got to learn, we’ve got to continue to learn, we’ve got to be good. Our history is our heritage. We have a long heritage of good teaching, good administration.

LEONARD Yes, we have to continue to learn, as well.

ROSE Then you’ve got to make sure that we’ve got good teaching. Well, if you want to go to Harvard, you get a good education.

LEONARD What have we got to do to make sure that we’re doing well in our history

ROSE No big deal.
