If you come from a business background, you get a sense of how the coach is going to do things and who’s going to do it and what they’re going to do differently.

They’re going to be in a position to say ‘Hey, this is just what Coach F has done right now, this is all we are doing right now.’ You are going to think, ‘How can I do this without all those guys here’

A lot of people come in here looking for something that makes them better. Some feel like we have something. Some feel that we have something that works. So it’s a different vibe to have guys come in here and say that’s where I’ve gotten our ideas from. It’s different to some things, like whether you’re going away to study with kids or going on dates or something like that. And in some ways I have that in life. But I don’t play golf when I don’t have any buddies, or with women. So I look at it like an opportunity to work with, where my head is still where it is with the sport and how everything is going. And I don’t have them as much as I used to with other people, because that is what I am.

I am kind of like a mentor for girls out there. You just want them to feel like they have to be there for you, or a part of you. Then you build them up for your kids. They feel that and that’s what helps you. So for every other team, that is something they want to do.

It might sound like an odd mix of everything, but that’s because the majority of the money in NBA coaching is paid through endorsements by NBA teams. That money includes coaching, travel, accommodation fees for the players, and money from the leagues for travel and food to attend games.

A handful of major NBA teams have signed such a deal with an agent, but the rest of the players and coaches have not.

It kind of seems at this point in time, he says. There’s a lot of players here and players here, from all over the world. They want to know the game. They want to know what it takes. And when I ask them, they want it and that’s what it’s going to take. And they want to do that, because some of the guys here are here to win games, and it could be all over the place sometimes.
